Current Research

  • I am involved in a project on Data Transformation and Model Calibration System for Carbon and Nutrient Dynamics in Australian Ecosystems, funded by the Australian National Data Service.
  • Together with colleagues at ILRI, we are conducting a project on enhancing earth observation capacity for Agriculture and Forest Management in Africa as a contribution to GEOSS.
  • Peter Grace (Queensland University of Technology) and I recently completed a project to derive a nitrous oxide emission factor map for Australian croplands.
  • Francesca Cotrofo, Keith Paustian, Steve Ogle, and I are working with Meena Bahlgopal to develop a new Baccalaureate concentration in greenhouse gases/soils and global change. We are doing this in conjunction with our effort to develop a new professional masters degree in greenhouse gas accounting and management within the department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability.
  • With support from the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, I am investigating the abatement potential of soil carbon sequestration in agriculture using the Century and Daycent models. I am also synthesizing data on national N inputs to investigate how efficiency of N use varies from place to place and how it has changed over time.
  • I am working with Australian and US colleagues to improve long-term predictions of carbon and nutrient dynamics in Australia's agroecosystems by assimilating datasets from long-term research sites. This work is supported by the Australian Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis.
