Agroecosystem Version of Century 4.0

Back to State-level page

The Agroecosytem PC version of Century 4.0 includes features for investigating cropping system - soil organic matter interactions. You should upgrade ALL your files (file.100s and executables) to the current (February 2000) version.

Please fill out and submit the information form below. We request this information to give us an opportunity to report bugs or upgrades to the user community. After doing so, click Download PC Century or Download UNIX Century on the submittal confirmation page.

Contents of the PC version zip file:
  1. The PC operating system version of Century.
  2. Two supporting programs - list100.exe and getorg.exe
  3. Century *.100 files.
  4. A set of example runs and documentaion.
  5. Documentation of enhancements in this version.
Example.txt illustrates the three-step process we use in the agricultural application of Century. It also contains an additional readme file, whatsnew.txt, detailing the enhancements and substantial changes from the last version. The executables run in DOS or from the WINDOWS MS-DOS Prompt window. The zip file is not self-executing; you will need a zip utility to extract the files.
    Regarding the UNIX version:
  1. The tar file contains the SUN platform version of Century executables. These executables work exactly the same way as the PC versions. All the documentation and *.100 files should be obtained from the PC zipped file.
  2. A word of warning about cross platform file compatability. The end of record designator is different between PC and UNIX. To keep the Century IO routines working properly, this conversion MUST be done before using the PC filename.100 and other text input files files with UNIX Century. Most FTP programs, and some editors, do that conversion automaticaly, or there are stand alone utilities, such as dos2unix, that can do the conversion.
  3. The binary files (*.bin) produced by the PC and UNIX versions are not compatable due to structural differences.
Manual Availability: The Century Manual is GPSR Technical Report No.4: CENTURY Soil Organic Matter Model Environment, Technical Documentation Agroecosystem Version 4.0 and it contains over 100 pages. The manual is for sale ($50.00, contact Becky Techau, becky@nrel.colostate.edu) or it can viewed online at http://www.nrel.colostate.edu/PROGRAMS/MODELING/CENTURY/CENTURY.html.

Be aware that the download link on the manual web page is for a slightly different "flavor" of Century than the one used by our Agroecosystem group - the one you will download. Our code allows more flexibility in the file and command line interfaces, some options in the decomposition models, and the latest bug fixes. The manual itself has not been updated since version 4 was released but it still provides the best overview of how all flavors of Century work. Further details of the differences can be found in the "whatsnew" file included in the archive.
