COMaP is:
Comprehensive: we have stitched together data from Federal, State, and local sources. A complete list of contributing agencies and groups can be found here: Data input list
Consistent: we provide a standardized GIS database and attributes to identify and track discrepancies. Please review the Data Model for complete listing of the attribute structure.
Current: our current update schedule is quarterly to semi-annual. We are constantly improving these data,
but if you find a discrepancy or error in the database - please email us
and we will incorporate the necessary changes in the next version.
Collaborative: COMaP is built from willing participation from a wide variety of Federal, State, and local partners
- these partnerships are essential to COMaP. We are grateful to our partners and data contributors to the project. A complete list of collaborators is available here. We are also thankful for financial
support from: the Colorado Division of Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, the USGS Southwest ReGAP project, and most recently Great Outdoors Colorado.
Regional scale: The approximate map scale of COMaP is 1:24000 to 1:100,000
COMaP is not :
A Data Warehouse: we will not re-distribute any raw data collected from primary data sources
Cadastral: some parcel-level data is used to produce COMaP, but it should not be interpreted
as storing legal representation of boundaries
A Mapping Service: some basic maps will be provided, including online on NDIS, but the COMaP
project is not staffed to create custom maps. Contact GIAM if you are interested in additional mapping or analysis.
Key products of the COMaP project:
1. One dataset, an ESRI ArcGIS 9.0 Personal Geodatabase, is developed using all available inputs including public and private lands information. We then remove all features representing conservation easements or protected areas on private lands. This allows us to to maintain two versions of the dataset: 'Public' and 'Private'. This is done to protect land trusts and private land owners who have conservation easements that they wish to not be mapped publicly.
2. The 'Public' version of COMaP is displayed as a map layer in the Colorado Division of Wildlife's Natural Diversity Information Source online mapping application: MapIt! This allows any user to view, pan, and zoom using a digital map to any area within Colorado. Note that private land protected through conservation easements will not be displayed. Also, locations where public access is prohibited (or allowed) - both public and private -- will be clearly distinguished on the map.
3. The 'Public' version is available through the NREL COMaP staff through a free subscription service. To ensure reliability of the data and to facilitate easy distribution and updating, please contact COMaP project personnel to inquire about subscribing.
4. The 'Private' version will be shared with collaborators (defined here as the primary data source contributors). These detailed data will NOT be downloadable freely from an FTP site. Letters of agreement that limit abilities and rights to disseminate these data are required.
5. County and watershed level summary tables are provided on this webpage (Technical Documents) that detail the number of acres in different ownership/management/protected area categories.
