Ethiopia Facts
Addis Ababa: The capital, whose name means "New Flower", was settled in 1886 and given its name by Empress Taytu, consort of Menelik II. The population of Addis Ababa is approximately 3 million.

Ethiopia is an independent Federal Democratic Republic with a President as head of state and a Prime Minister as the head of government. The constitution was established in 1994, following the over-throw of the Mengistu military dictatorship in 1991.

Of the 277 mammals in Ethiopia, 31 are endemic including the walia ibex, Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala, Gelada baboon, and Menelik's bushbuck. Also endemic are 16 of 861 birds, 24 of 63 amphibians, 9 of 210 reptiles, 4 0f 150 fish and 7 of 324 butterflies.

Ethiopia's lowest point is the Danakil Depression, a basin located in north-eastern Ethiopia that is also one of the lowest points on earth not covered by water. Resting at a mere -125 meters (-410 feet) the Danakil landscape is spotted with bright yellow sulphur fields, striking green crystal pools and shimmering salt beds.

The countrie's highest point is Ras Dejen mountain, which makes up the eastern peak of the rim of a monstrous extinct volcano in the Simien range in northern Ethiopia. Reaching 4,533 meters (14,872 feet) the peak is a cluster of nine rocky peaks made of basaltic volcanic rock. Locals believed the mountains to be inhabited by hostile spirits, so the peaks were not summitted until Italy's abortive occupation of Ethiopia in 1935.
