The original forest
was slashed and burned during the 1940's by farmers to
create artificial grassland for livestock. The abandoning
of grassland in the 70's allowed growth of a secondary
forest (211.8 ha) in part of the catchment. In the 80's,
the abandoned grassland were occupied by Eucalyptus
grandis (415 ha) . Fire has no longer been used since
the mid 1980's.
The site is located at 19° S
to 19° 30' S and 42° W to 42° 30' W.
Site area is 630 ha.

Rainfall and Temperature
The climate is hot (annual
average = 23° C) and humid (total annual rainfall
= 1400 mm) with delimited dry (from March to October)
and rain seasons (November to February).
Soil type is laterite, acidic,
and poor in phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Native vegetation type is
tropical rain forest (~ 40 m high).
Principal biome is Atlantic
