WR575 Snow Hydrology Field Methods


This week-long field course will offer hands-on experience in snow hydrology, especially for the student who would like to see an overview and field methods in one course. A summary of the course and the expectations of the student are explained in the course syllabus. The proposed course activities are oultined in the tentative schedule.

SPRING 2016: This winter, the course will take a slightly different format from 2014 and 2015. There will be two one day trips near Cameron Pass on February 6 and April 30, 2015. There will be one long(er) weekend from March 31 through April 3 near Steamboat Springs at the Trout Creek Lodge. We will do our field exercises near the Dry Lake campground (and SNOTEL station) along County Road 38 in the Routt National Forest. The mandatory orientation meeting will be for the long weekend and will be held on Monday March 28, 2016, in NR 320 at 5pm. SPRING 2015: The course was two long weekends (February 20-22 and April 3-5, 2014). We were fortunate to be able to stay in private accommodation in Steamboat Springs. We did our field exercises near the Dry Lake campground (and SNOTEL station) along County Road 38 in the Routt National Forest. We also had an exciting day at Storm Peak Lab, and half a day at Steamboat ski area. We were assisted by Ryan Webb and Niah Venable of CSU.

SPRING 2014: The course was two long weekends (February 21-23 and April 4-6, 2014). We were fortunate to be able to stay in private accommodation in Steamboat Springs. We did our field exercises near the Dry Lake campground (and SNOTEL station) along County Road 38 in the Routt National Forest. We also had an exciting day at Storm Peak Lab, and half a day at Steamboat ski area. We were assisted by Ryan Webb of CSU.

JANUARY 2013: The course was offered from January 6-10, 2012 (Monday-Friday) near Leadville, Colorado. We stayed at Grand West Village Resort , and did our fieldwork around the Brumley SNOTEL station and on the CMC Leadville campus. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures. The last day of the trip was a day at A-Basin ski area.

MARCH 2012: A different version of the course was taught with Nacho López-Moreno of the Pyrenees Ecology Institute. We stayed at Casa Ruba in Biescas, Aragón, and did our fieldwork at Baños de Panticosa España, Somport France, and Portalet France. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

JANUARY 2012: The course was offered from January 9-13, 2012 (Monday-Friday) in the Apache National Forest of eastern Arizona aalong Hwy 191. We stayed at Hannagan Meadow (McCafferty/McNeill Cabins), and did our fieldwork around the Hannagan Meadow SNOTEL station. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures. The last day of the trip was a day at Sunrise ski area.

SPRING 2011: The course was offered from March 13-17, 2011 (Sunday-Thursday) in the Ogden Valley, north of Salt Lake City, Utah. We stayed at Durfee Creek , and did our fieldwork along Ben Lomond trail. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures. The last day of the trip was a day at Powder Mountain ski area.

SPRING 2009: The course was offered from March 15-19, 2009 (Sunday-Thursday) in the mountains near Dubois in Northwest Wyoming. We stayed at a cabin bordering the Shoshone National Forest, and did our fieldwork at Togwotee Pass. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures. The last day of the trip was a day at Jackson Hole ski area and dinner at Snake River.

SPRING 2008: The course was offered from March 15-19, 2008 (Saturday-Wednesday) in the mountains just south of Telluride, Colorado. We stayed in a beautiful house in Rico (VRBO #53330). Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures. The trip was capped off by a day at Telluride .

SPRING 2007: The course was offered from March 10-13, 2007 (Saturday-Tuesday) in the Valles Caldera of New Mexico. This year we rejoined Paul Brooks and the University of Arizona.
The lecture were presented before the trip in two days: day 1 in the NR building, and day 2 at Avo's. Click on the following for directions to the Valles. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

SPRING 2006: The course was offered from March 12-16, 2006 (Sunday-Thursday) along Cement Creek near Crested Butte, Colorado. We stayed at the Pioneer Guest Cabins (Gothic Cabin), were assisted by Jeffrey Deems of CSU. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

SPRING 2005: The course was offered from March 12-16, 2005 (Saturday-Wednesday) near Clark, Colorado (29 miles north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado). We stayed at the Columbine Cabins, which gave us easy access to Hahn's Peak. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

SPRING 2004: The course was offered from March 14-18, 2004 (Sunday-Thursday) in Silverton, Colorado. We stayed at the St. Paul's Lodge, and were assisted by Chris Landry of the Center For Snow and Avalanche Studies and Jeffrey Deems of CSU. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

SPRING 2003: The course was offered from March 14-18, 2003 in Fraser, Colorado by Paul Brooks of the University of Arizona, Kaye Brubaker of the University of Maryland, and Steven Fassnacht of Colorado State University. Fieldwork was undertaken at Fraser Experimental Forest, and near Berthoud Pass. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.

SPRING 2002: The course was offered from March 13-17, 2002 in South Fork, Colorado by Paul Brooks of the University of Arizona, and Steven Fassnacht of Colorado State University, with assistance of Noah Molotch of the University of Arizona. Fieldwork was undertaken in part at Wolf Creek Ski Area, and near the Upper San Juan SNOTEL site. Some of the field exercises are shown in pictures.
