Visa Waiver Program

The United States has recently enacted the Visa Waiver Program. With this program, citizens of 27 countries that will be in the United States for less than 90 days for business or tourism only need to show a passport. This passport must be valid for at least six months after your intended stay in the United States. It must also be machine readable. For additional information, please visit the Department of State Visa Waiver Program website.

The countries included in the Waiver Program are: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Recent tightenings in security have changed the way the Visa Waiver Program works. Citizens from participating countries now need a Travel Authorization. This is a relativly simple process that can be completed at the Electronic System for Travel Authorization website. It will take up to 72 hours for the Authorization to be processed, so it is recommended that steps are taken to begin the forms as soon as possible. Please visit the United States' page on frequently asked questions for further help and information.

US-Visit Program

Due to a new program enacted in 2004, some foreign travelers are required to have their two index fingers scanned and provide a digital headshot to prove their identity once they arrive at their destination. Even citizens under the Visa Waiver Program are required to provide this information. For more details, please visit the Department of Homeland Security website.

Weather

This year’s Soil Organic Matter Conference will be held in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. Colorado Springs sits more than a mile high with an elevation of 6,035 feet above sea level. In the summer, Colorado Springs experiences low humidity and an average temperature of 80° F. Cooler clothing is recommend for daytime adventures. However, the higher elevation of the city makes the evenings rather chilly. A light jacket or windbreaker is typically all that is needed in the evenings.

Security

Due to tightened airline security, certain items have been restricted or banned from passenger’s carry-on baggage. A full list can be found at the Transportation Security Administration website. In general, these items can be placed in checked luggage, but not carry-on baggage. If you mistakenly bring a banned item with your carry-on luggage, Security is unable to keep the item for you. However, the airport does have a post office located close to the security checkpoint. You may step out of line and mail the item to yourself.
