Upcoming Seminar:

January 29, 2021: “Appreciating the role of forests in bumble bee conservation” featuring Dr. John Mola, ecologist with the USGS Fort Collins Science Center

When most people think of bumble bees, maybe they think of meadows, summertime flowers, and plump fuzzy bees buzzing about on a sunny day. John, on the other hand, thinks of forests and sea turtles. There is a great body of work focusing on summer flowering habitat restoration as bumble bee food sources. However, there is also a growing appreciation of the role early-season flowering habitats like forests play in bumble bee conservation. In this talk John will present some results from a long-term study of bumble bee food plant availability over 22 years in Illinois forests, meadows, and wetlands. Then, we’ll bring together a diverse body of work on the ways bumble bees interact with forests. Finally, we’ll determine what bumble bees and sea turtles have in common.
