Sustainable Development Summit In T-Minus 2 Days! Join the Discussion.

Leaders from around the world will commit to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York between September 25th and September 27th. These new goals will guide the actions of national governments and the international community in a bid to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change within the next 15 years.

There are a number of useful articles on the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals. A recent article in the journal Nature, discusses the goals and some of the associated challenges and concerns about passing such broad and vague development goals. Another article, “10 facts about the SDGs,” by Owen Gaffney provides a useful overview of the goals. Additionally, the Huffington Post has launched a new series “What’s Working: Sustainable Development Goals,” which highlights some of the most prominent issues the UN General Council will tackle (e.g. “ Arctic Tipping Points”, and “A World of Waste and Imbalance”).

UN_Sustainable_Development_Summit_LogoFuture Earth, an international research initiative based out of Colorado has accepted an invitation by the international non-profit World Economic Forum to guest edit a SDG series. Many of these resources provide information related to climate change, for example, “Have the oceans reached a tipping point?” “Climate change may be worse than we think,” and “6 invisible global water issues.” Others provide insight into the importance of ending poverty, fighting hunger and improving well-being, for example, “Four ways countries are successfully fighting hunger,” “How can we eradicate poverty by 2030?,”and 5 ways to improve health and wellbeing for all.”
